RNA secondary structures have been shown to play important roles in translation, replication, and innate immune evasion during the viral life cycle of a variety of positive-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses. However, the search for novel regulatory RNA structural elements remains challenging when considering coding regions of viral genomes. To that end, I am interested in using biochemical and genetic techniques to identify novel regions of functional RNA secondary structure contained within the coding region of the West Nile Virus genome.
