Viruses have evolved intricate mechanisms to hijack the host cellular machinery and subvert host defences. However, we have only recently developed understanding of the importance of higher order structural elements in viral genomes, which play crucial regulatory roles in viral replication, transcription and translation. I am interested in using SHAPE-MaP to identify novel regions of RNA secondary structure and elucidating their functional importance in the viral life cycle. Currently, I am working on elucidating the structures of the genomic RNA of murine norovirus (MNV).
